Cat Flap Installation
It is common sense, that if you are the owner of a cat, you have a cat flap on your front and back doors of your house. While this may sound easy enough, it can actually be quite a complex procedure. We recommend that, if you do require a cat flap installation, you use a professional glazing company such as ourselves. However, if you do wish to attempt to do this yourself, here is a quick step by step guide on how to do it.
The first thing you will need to do, is to determine the height of the cat flap, allowing easy access in and out for you feline friend. To do this, you will need to measure your cat, from the lowest point of its belly down to the ground. The average cat tends to be around five inches but it is always best to measure.
Now you will need to apply this height the relevant door. This is easily done. All you have to do, is measure from the bottom of the door upwards and make a mark on the door once you hit the required height. This is where the bottom of your cat flap will end up being.
Next up, you will need to determine where the centre of the cat flap will be. To do this you will need to find the centre of the door. This is done by measuring the width of the door and then simply halving it. Again, make a mark where the centre will end up being.
Now, take your cat flap and line it up with the mark for the bottom and the centre of the cat flap level with the centre mark. Holding the cat flap in place, make a mark for all four corners of your cat flap, so that you can see where your cat flap will need to end up.
Next you will need to mark a straight line from each of the corners so that you have drawn your cat flap on to the door. The best way to do this is to use a square but a ruler should be just fine. Once completed, you will need to drill a hole at each of the corners.
You will now need a jigsaw, as you are going to need to cut from on drilled hole to the next and so on until you have cut out the hole for your cat flap. Once done, you will need to sand down the inner edges so that they are smooth.
Now you can fit the inner frame of your cat flap to the inside of your door. The inner frame is the side with the cat flap attached. You fit this by placing it in to the smooth hole and then screwing it in, making sure not to over tighten. Finally, fit the outer frame to the outside of the door in the exact same way. Now you have you cat flap.
While these directions do seem fairly straight forward, it is not as easy as it seems and we do highly recommend that you use a professional glazing company such as ourselves.
