Types of double glazing
Secondary glazing is when you fit a second pane of glass over your current pane of glass. This is the cheapest type of double glazing available. This produces the air pocket that insulates the home. Secondary glazing is less effective than most other forms of glazing, as there is no sealant but it is still more effective than a single pane.
Sealed glazing is when two panes of glass are sealed into the window frame creating the air pocket that insulates your home. The air can sometimes be replaced by a gas such as xenon. While the air does act as a great insulator, the xenon is even better but comes at a cost. It is also advisable to have a PVC or wood frame rather than a metal frame.
Low emissivity glazing helps to reduce heat loss during in the winter. This type of glazing enables the sunlight to be obtained by the room and therefore transferred in to heat, with the double glazing preventing the heat from escaping. This helps to save on heating costs in the winter.
Tinted glazing is a reflective coating that is used on the outside of the window and reflects the sunlight away from the room, helping to keep it cooler on those hot summer days. However, the tinted glazing does prevent natural light from entering the room, which results in very dull winters.
